Description

The Cyprus Institute (CYI) is a world-class, non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation. It is a regional Center of Excellence, addressing issues of regional interest but of global significance, with an emphasis on cross-disciplinary research and international collaborations. The focus of the Institute’s Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EERWC) is on renewable energy technologies, sustainable water and land management and climate adaptation. The Center’s Water Department operates the Cyprus hydro-ecological observatories to assess the impacts of a variable and changing climate on semi-arid Mediterranean agroecosystems through advanced monitoring and modelling techniques. The Department cooperates with farmers on water and land management innovations, exchanges knowledge with national authorities and serves as an independent reviewer of the financial aspects of the Rural Development Program.
Role :
CYI will set up a water erosion Monitoring Node in the Troodos Mountains and a wind erosion Monitoring Node in the Mesaoria Plain of Cyprus.
In WP1 - Setting the scene for a dynamic soil erosion monitoring system, CYI is leading Task 1.3 on the review of management practices that reduce erosion.
Adriana Bruggeman
Adriana is leading Task 1.3 (review of policy framework and management practices to reduce erosion) and the water and wind erosion monitoring nodes in Cyprus. She is a hydrologist, interested in the monitoring and modelling of hydrologic and ecosystems’ processes, erosion, natural resource management and transdisciplinary research.
Associate Professor
Hakan Djuma
Hakan will support all erosion research activities and co-lead the water and wind erosion monitoring nodes in Cyprus. His research interests are ecohydrological observatories, eddy covariance observations and environmentally-friendly land management practices to reduce soil erosion.
Associate Research Scientist
Christos Zoumides
Christos will lead stakeholder and citizen science activities in Cyprus and support the socioeconomic and policy research. His research interests are ecological economics, ecosystem services, sustainability indicators, and rural development.
